Mississippi State has named defensive coordinator Zach Arnett its new head coach, the school announced Monday.

Arnett, 41, has been with Mississippi State since 2018, serving as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator for the past four seasons. He has also been the team's interim head coach for the past two bowl games.

Arnett takes over for Mike Leach, who died in December after a heart attack. Leach went 19-17 in three seasons at Mississippi State.

Arnett is a former defensive back who played at New Mexico State from 1999 to 2002. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at New Mexico State in 2003.

Arnett is known for his aggressive defensive style. Under his leadership, Mississippi State's defense has ranked among the top 25 in the country in several categories, including scoring defense, total defense, and sacks.

Arnett is the third head coach at Mississippi State since 2012. Dan Mullen went 69-46 in nine seasons before leaving for Florida in 2017. Joe Moorhead went 14-12 in two seasons before being fired in 2019.
